Type : Boys only         Boarding and day secondary school              State

Campus Location
Nelson College was established in 1856. Nelson was one of the first established districts in New Zealand and the school is the oldest state secondary school in the country. Nelson is a very safe city. The city has a good climate and has an extensive recreational programme in which the 60,000 residents have access to skiing, sea and tramping activities. Many nationalities are represented, each being given the chance to integrate and at the same time encouraged to retain their own culture.
Special Character
With a roll of 950 students, 220 boarders and 55 international students, the college retains a caring and disciplined approach to education. Students are encouraged to work hard to strive for academic excellence. Over 90% of Form 7 students who enter the bursary examination will gain entrance to tertiary institutions. Extensive subject selection is available, with a joint curriculum offered with Nelson College for Girls in the senior school.
Support for International Students
An orientation programme is offered to all international students. Students are met at the airport and then introduced to school life in Nelson. Individual educational programmes are established by the Dean of International Students. This programme takes into account the need for an intensive English course - assessing the need before introducing students to the wide range of subjects available at all levels. Classroom teachers value the excellent attitude to work by overseas students and enjoy having them in their class as they set such a good standard of work effort.
Special English Courses
An intensive English course for beginners, as part of full time schooling; ongoing English language teaching for international students; proficiency English courses and ongoing support for seniors to prepare for tertiary study in New Zealand; one-to-one tutoring available from qualified teachers.
Accommodation
The 220 boarders are housed in three boarding houses which are on site. Special care is taken of students living a long way from home. Homestay placements are also available for students who would rather live with a local family.
