Special Character
The buildings and grounds of Nelson College for Girls are situated on a
hill site in central Nelson, a small city in a quiet and beautiful coastal
province of New Zealand. The weather is usually sunny all year round and
the community is friendly and peaceful.
Nelson College for Girls was established in 1883 by settlers from England who wanted to make sure their daughters would receive high-quality education within a refined environment. There is now a wide range of high quality courses offered, including the classical disciplines and the latest technical subjects, taught by well-qualified and enthusiastic teachers.
Students receive personal attention in small classes and are encouraged to strive for excellence. The College has a superb record of high academic results, as well as a strong reputation for musical, artistic and sporting achievement. There are good links to universities in the cities of Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin and to the New Zealand Correspondence School.
Nelson College for Girls has a maximum roll of 950 students, about 180 of them are boarding students from around New Zealand and the world.
Support for Overseas Students
Nelson College for Girls offers a fully-developed programme to help overseas
students at the college have a successful and happy education in New Zealand.
Note: There is a limit of 60 places for students from overseas. In 1998, we have students from Finland, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Germany, Thailand, Japan, Korea and the Pacific Islands.
All students are met at Nelson Airport on arrival. Orientation programmes at the start of the year introduce students to school life in Nelson.
