Special Character
Wellington College is a state secondary school for young men. The college was established in 1867 to provide a complete education from Form 3 to Form 7 with an emphasis on preparation for a tertiary education. Recognition of student effort and celebration of achievement in all spheres of college life are features. School uniform is compulsory for all students and an emphasis is placed on pride in personal presentation.
Location and Facilities
Set in well landscaped grounds, Wellington College projects an image of
history, imposing facilities and an environment of orderliness. The school
is sited on 12 hectares of land between Wellington's green belt and the
city and is close to Government, business, sporting, tourist and cultural
facilities.
In addition to 50 classrooms, laboratory, technical and art facilities, extensive fundraising has resulted in the building of state of the art Sports Centre, Arts Centre and Computer Block.
Academic Programme
Effective teaching and learning are emphasised as the primary purpose of
the school. In Forms 3 to 5 compulsory subjects are English, Mathematics,
Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Design Technology, Music and
Health. Up to three optional subjects are also selected with an emphasis
on learning another language. Forms 6 and 7 programmes offer a wide range
of academic programmes preparing students for university and polytechnic
studies.
Extra Curricular Programme
A feature of the college is its strong extra curricular programme that allows
and encourages a large number of students to take part in a wide range of
team and individual sports. Some of these include, athletics, basketball,
cricket, rugby, swimming and tennis. Students also take part in a wide range
of cultural activities including drama, music and debating.
Special Relations with International Schools and Students
The college participates in exchanges with a number of secondary schools
around the world including Europe, Canada, South America and Japan.
Student Welfare
A network of staff including an International Students Welfare Officer,
guidance counsellors, Deans and liaison staff provides extensive support
for student's welfare and needs.
Accommodation
A professional Guardianship and Homestay programme is provided where a student
has no personal guardian in Wellington. Homestays are arranged with New
Zealand families.
English Language Entry Requirements
Students entering at Form 6 and 7 must provide evidence of English language
proficiency. Each case is evaluated on individual merits.
English Language Support
For students entering in the final term of the year a full time English
language and Orientation Course is provided in preparation for the next
academic year. Specialist ESOL and support programmes are provided throughout
the year for students on full academic courses.
Fees
Annual tuition fees for 2000 are NZ$9,000 or NZ$2,250 per term (4 term year).
